In recent years, Azerbaijan has drawn global attention through its success in hosting major international events. In particular, the holding of COP29 and World Urban Forum 13 in the country is seen as a reflection of its growing influence and diplomatic capacity.
In an exclusive comment for Fortunamag.az, Member of Parliament Azar Allahveranov stated:
“Today we are witnessing an extremely important international event. The Urban Forum, in terms of its scale and significance, is considered one of the leading global platforms after the UN and COP formats. The fact that such an event is being held in Azerbaijan demonstrates the high level of international trust in our country. It shows that Azerbaijan has fully established itself as a reliable partner within the UN platform. Leading international institutions already trust the country’s organizational capacity and secure environment.”
He also highlighted the special importance of COP29 in Azerbaijan’s diplomatic history:
“COP29 was not just an international event. Azerbaijan set new standards both organizationally and politically. The country played an important role in global climate decision-making. One of the most notable achievements was the rapid progress in climate finance, where significant results were reached in a short period of time—something that previously took years of negotiations.”
The MP noted that Azerbaijan managed to complete organizational preparations within just a few months while effectively building intergovernmental dialogue and securing important decisions.
According to him, one of the key topics of World Urban Forum 13 is urbanization and sustainable urban development:
“Urbanization is rapidly increasing worldwide, and it cannot be stopped. The main task is to manage it properly. Urbanization should not be seen as a problem, but as an opportunity for development. Key issues discussed include balanced urban growth, integration of vulnerable social groups, ecological approaches, and public participation.”
He concluded by emphasizing that Azerbaijan is strengthening its position as a major international platform, and this trend will continue in the future.
